CHAPTER 1
WHAT IS FOREX?
Forex, short for foreign exchange, is the global marketplace where currencies are exchanged.
Every time one currency is exchanged for another, a foreign exchange transaction takes place.
Forex is commonly traded through currency pairs.
Examples include:
EUR/USD
Euro / US Dollar
GBP/USD
British Pound / US Dollar
USD/JPY
US Dollar / Japanese Yen
When you see a currency pair such as EUR/USD, the first currency is called the base currency, while the second currency is called the quote currency.
The price represents how much of the quote currency is required to purchase one unit of the base currency.
CHAPTER 2
HOW DOES FOREX TRADING WORK?
Forex trading involves taking a position based on the expected movement of a currency pair.
For example, a trader researching EUR/USD may believe that its price could rise.
Another trader may believe that the price could fall.
Depending on the trading product and position taken, traders may be able to benefit from price movements in either direction.
However, markets are unpredictable.
A position that moves against a trader can result in a loss, and leveraged trading can increase the size of potential losses.
Understanding the market and the risks involved is therefore an important part of learning about forex.
CHAPTER 3
UNDERSTANDING CURRENCY PAIRS
Currency pairs can generally be grouped into three categories.
MAJOR PAIRS
Major pairs involve some of the world's most actively traded currencies.
Examples include:
• EUR/USD
• GBP/USD
• USD/JPY
• USD/CHF
• AUD/USD
• USD/CAD
• NZD/USD
MINOR PAIRS
Minor pairs combine major currencies but typically exclude the US dollar.
Examples include:
• EUR/GBP
• EUR/AUD
• GBP/JPY
• EUR/CHF
EXOTIC PAIRS
Exotic pairs generally combine a major currency with the currency of an emerging or smaller economy.
These pairs can have different liquidity and trading-cost characteristics.
Always research the specific currency pair before trading.
CHAPTER 4
WHAT IS A FOREX BROKER?
A forex broker provides a trading environment through which eligible customers can access financial markets.
Brokers can differ considerably.
When comparing providers, you may encounter differences in:
• Account types
• Spreads
• Commissions
• Trading platforms
• Available markets
• Minimum deposits
• Leverage
• Educational resources
• Trading tools
• Customer support
• Regulatory arrangements
This is why comparing providers before choosing a platform can be useful.
CHAPTER 5
WHAT IS A TRADING PLATFORM?
A trading platform is the software or application used to view markets, analyze price movements and place trades.
Popular platforms in the forex industry include:
METATRADER 4
Often referred to as MT4, this platform is widely used by forex traders and supports charting, technical analysis and automated trading through Expert Advisors.
METATRADER 5
MT5 is a newer multi-asset trading platform offering charting, analysis and trading functionality.
BROKER-SPECIFIC PLATFORMS
Some brokers also provide their own web or mobile trading applications.
When choosing a platform, consider its usability, available tools, supported devices and the markets you intend to research.
CHAPTER 6
WHAT IS A FOREX SPREAD?
The spread is the difference between the bid price and the ask price of a financial instrument.
For example, if a currency pair has a bid price of 1.1000 and an ask price of 1.1002, the difference represents the spread.
Spreads can vary depending on:
• The broker
• The currency pair
• Market conditions
• Account type
• Liquidity
• Time of day
Some account types may offer raw or very low spreads while charging a separate commission.
Others may incorporate more of the trading cost into the spread.
When comparing brokers, consider the overall trading cost rather than looking at the spread alone.
CHAPTER 7
WHAT IS LEVERAGE?
Leverage allows a trader to control a position that is larger than the amount of capital deposited as margin.
Leverage can provide greater market exposure with a smaller amount of capital.
However, leverage works both ways.
It can increase potential gains and potential losses.
A relatively small market movement can therefore have a significant effect on a leveraged position.
Before using leverage, make sure you understand how margin requirements and potential losses work.
CHAPTER 8
WHAT IS A STOP-LOSS?
A stop-loss is an order designed to close a position when the market reaches a specified price.
Traders may use stop-loss orders as part of a risk-management approach.
However, a stop-loss does not guarantee that a position will always close at exactly the requested price.
During periods of rapid market movement, gaps or low liquidity, execution may differ from the requested level.
Understanding these limitations is important.
CHAPTER 9
HOW TO COMPARE FOREX BROKERS
There is no single broker that is automatically right for everyone.
When researching a provider, consider the following.
